Abstract

Purpose: This study is to investigate the effects of exercise interventions on respiratory relief in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methods: To calculate the mean effect size of exercise interventions on respiratory distress in domestic and international patients with COPD, individual studies reported in academic journals and dissertations published until October 7, 2017, were searched. The selection criteria for the analysis included: 1) patients with COPD, 2) Intervention consisting of exercise to alleviate respiratory distress, 3) Outcome measures included PaO2, FEV1, 6-minute walk distance test, and self-reported respiratory distress index. 4) quantitative research. 5) randomized controlled trial.

Results: A total of 2,273 articles were searched and 10 articles met the final criteria for analysis. Meta-analysis of 2 studies, including the effect on FEV1, showed that exercise interventions were effective in improving FEV1 (Standardized Mean Difference [SDM]=1.58, Z=1.28, p=.217). Meta-analysis of 8 studies examining the effect on the 6-minute walk distance test demonstrated that exercise interventions significantly increased the distance walked in 6 minutes (SDM=0.73, Z=2.55, p<.01). Meta-analysis of 9 studies measuring the self-reported respiratory distress index showed no statistically significant effect of exercise interventions on respiratory distress (SDM=0.70, Z=1.29, p=.197). One study analyzing PaO2 was excluded from the meta-analysis.

Conclusion: It was evident that continuous exercise is important regardless of the type of exercise intervention.
